Every budtender knows this moment.
A customer approaches the counter with the cautious confidence of someone carrying secondhand information.
They lean in slightly and say something like:
"My friend told me to ask for… um…"
Then they look down at their phone like they’re about to read a secret code.
"Do you have… Gorilla Pancake Cookies Diesel OG?"
Now at this point the budtender has two options.
Option one: pretend that strain absolutely exists.
Option two: gently explain that cannabis strain names sometimes travel through a game of telephone before reaching the dispensary counter.
Because somewhere between the original recommendation and the moment they walked in, things may have gotten a little… scrambled.
Sometimes the request sounds like a breakfast menu.
Sometimes it sounds like a monster truck.
And sometimes it sounds like a strain that definitely existed in 2017 but hasn't been seen since.
But the real beauty of this customer is that they trust their friend.
Their friend had a good experience.
Their friend said, “You’ve gotta try this.”
So here they are, ready to give cannabis a shot based on a recommendation that may or may not have survived the journey intact.
This is where the budtender gets to do a little translating.
"What did your friend say it helped with?"
Relaxing?
Pain relief?
Creativity?
Sleep?
Because once you understand the goal, the mysterious strain name suddenly matters a lot less.
The conversation becomes a little detective work.
And eventually the customer walks out with something close—sometimes even better—than whatever their friend originally recommended.
Then the best part happens a few days later.
They come back in smiling and say:
"That worked great."
And somewhere out there, their friend gets the credit.
Which, honestly, feels completely fair.
Because in the cannabis world, word-of-mouth might still be the most powerful marketing strategy on the planet.
Even if the strain name gets a little creative along the way.
